Overview
Remember!
Very large numbers of wildlife inhabit the plains which don’t migrate. So, for those who prefer a quieter, more peaceful safari should travel outside of peak season to experience the plains at other less crowded times.
East African Rains
Unlike southern Africa East Africa has two rainy seasons – short and long.
The short rains traditionally come in November/early December. Outside of the busy main Christmas period this can be a good time to visit to avoid crowds and enjoy low season rates.
The long rains traditionally come at the end of March through May, tailing off in early June when the herds are usually quite hard to reach over to the west of the park. It’s not a great time to visit as the roads can become flooded with water or thick mud. Also, many lodges take the opportunity to close in April and May to give the staff a break. The resident wildlife remains of course, but unless you have to travel now, best avoided.
See our blog on African Rain for more advice about the rainy or ‘green’ season in Africa, which explain that you shouldn’t always avoid the rains.
