Why Segera?
Overlooking snow-capped Mount Kenya, luxurious Segera Retreat is found on Laikipia’s savannah grasslands, home to the second-highest density of wildlife in Kenya. Game drives, guided nature walks and cultural activities showcase the environment, facilitated by an Experience Host and Guide.
Accommodation: Beautifully renovated stables form the core of the main area, while six large luxurious villas rise on wooden platforms above a profusion of botanical life. The lavish new Farmhouse Homestead, Segera House and perfectly-positioned Villa Segera boast even greater privacy and luxury.
Throughout, the Retreat and its gardens are filled with selected paintings and other art from amongst Africa’s most inspiring artists from The Zeitz Collection. Other delights include a spa and gym, as well as the unique Nay Palad Bird’s Nest sleep-out. The sumptuous cuisine comprises Segera’s own free-range beef and organic vegetables.
Purpose: Owned by Jochen Zeitz, and with the support of the Zeitz Foundation, Segera Retreat is at the forefront of positive change in Kenya; its mission is to achieve a healthy, holistic balance of the 4Cs (Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce). This ethos has made the retreat a tangible example of successful multiple land-use efforts and proof that luxury can be sustainable.
Genuinely Relaxed
Activities focus on the wildlife, the local culture and sustainable projects, the gardens and cuisine, the art collection, the spa and gym.
However, what you do and when you do it is up to you. No schedule, no pressure – a wilderness retreat like no other!
For this reason there’s no itinerary – how long you stay and how you plan to spend your time is your choice…
➤ Segera – Getting Here and Accomodation
For those who have an early arrival into Nairobi, you will be met and transferred to the domestic airport for the short but spectacular scenic flight to private Laikipia Conservancy. (Note: accommodation can be organised in Nairobi if a later flight arrival is booked).
Segera House
Luxury accommodation on the estate consists of:
5 luxurious and elegant garden villas on stilts – centred around a vast swimming pool and surrounded by a private cactus wall. One of the villas is a family villa and all have private decks overlooking the savannah where wildlife roams free.
The Farmhouse – this gorgeous 3 bedroomed, 3 bathroomed house was the orginal ranch house. It has a private view with views of Mount Kenya and a single room ideal for an au pair or teenager.
Villa Segera – contains two master suites connected by a suspended walkway. They share a private pool, elegant open-sided dining area and lounge. Views across the Sugeroi River towards Mount Kenya mean that you can enjoy a safari from your verandah.
The Greenhouse – a botanically inspired private two bedroom house with multiple glass windows to reflect light and the greenery of the surrounding gardens.
➤ About Segera and the Wildlife
At Segera you can explore 50,000 acres of Kenyan savannah, woodlands and riverine forests at your own pace. This exclusively private wilderness was once a working cattle ranch, but it has been returned into a thriving wildlife conservation area.
Wildlife includes: lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena that hunt the abundant plains game.
There is an extraordinary birdlife and many rare and endangered species: Grevy’s zebra, Reticulated giraffe, Patas monkey and even wild dogs have been researched here.
Every year there are new generations of predators and prey, and more elephant migrating through the estate. In the evenings you will hear the call of a lion, the melancholy whoop of hyena and zebra yipping. No day here is ever alike and every day is extra-ordinary.
