Meaning of Kasbah and Ksour
The word kasbah has come to mean a fortified mansion or palace, traditionally a square building with four towers at the angles, built of raw earth and housing an important local family. The construction is actually of Berber origin and in Berber is called tighremt. The word kasbah dates from the 1920’s and comes from recent Arab and French settlers.
The oldest kasbahs were built in the 17th and 18th century, but most are only about 100 years old. Previously the population of the pre-Saharan valleys lived in the ksour. A ksar (plural ksour) is a fortified village protected by watchtowers, containing houses, mosque, plazas etc. Ksour entrances are often highly decorated and some date back thousands of years.
