Navruz Spring Festival – 15-30 March 2026
The most beloved holiday in Uzbekistan is Navruz Spring Festival. This UN-recognised holiday is widely celebrated everywhere in Central Asia as a day of peace and charity. It falls at the Spring Equinox when the days are of equal length.
The Navruz Spring Festival is incredibly old. Originating in Persia, with the ancient cult of sun worship and Zoroastiranism. It is a New Year festival for the Turkic and Iranian peoples, associated with new hopes and expectations. In Uzbekistan it was re-instated in 1989.
Games, Fairs and Spring Cleaning!
- Navruz is a time for traditional games, music, drama festivals and lavish colorful fairs. The holiday is celebrated on March 21st, on the day of the vernal equinox. All ethnic groups join in enthusiastically.
- Just prior to Navruz, people traditionally do khashar (voluntary and joint public work), during which they clean and decorate their cities, towns and villages – a national ‘Spring Clean’!
- Traditional Uzbek games take place such as equestrian tournaments and wrestling, plus the national game ‘Kopkari’ where two teams on horseback battle over a goat carcass.
- You can also view the Uzbek national puppet-show, traditional Uzbek music, and street performance of artists and clowns, and tight rope-walkers.
Spring Feasting!
Since the festival is associated with abundance preparations are also made for huge feast. There is much baking and sharing of special homemade dishes – savoury pies, flaky samsas and the fragrant national ‘plov’.
But the main dish of the feast is sumalyak – a taffy-like treat. Sumalyak is made from new shoots of wheat, symbolizing eternal life, and wheat flour. Making sumalyak is a slow process – 24 hours in a cauldron with continuous stirring! Needless to say it is a communal effort with friends, family and neighbours all lending a hand. The pot is a place for the women to gather and share songs, stories and gossip. It is a wonderful and joyful celebration of the close-knit Uzbek communities.
